Illustration Friday: “Surrender”

January 30, 2011

“And then, at last, he surrendered to the dreams that awaited him.”

I enjoy drawing and painting in black and gray, but being a watercolorist and especially a colorist, I prefer to make my gray by blending French Ultramarine blue and Burnt Sienna to alter the warm and cool tones throughout the piece. It is just more interesting to me than using watered down black ink.

Converting to true grayscale is a simple click in photoshop, and as long as the highlights and shadows are consistent throughout, it will still work for assignments that truly need to be grayscale. Just for comparative purposes, here is a converted version below:

    Either way – wonderful image!

I love them both, since they offer a different feel for each! I’m just like that I love black, gray and white, but I’m known for my strong color! Mine comes from being heavily influence by the Wizard of Oz the movie! The impact of the movie changing from black & white to full color still mesmerizes me to this day! Eeek, I digress! Wonderful style! :)

I like both, but the first one is so much more vivid with its color variations. I think black and white is better for just bringing out a structure, but what I like best is an ‘almost’ black and white appearance with just small amounts of colour like in your first illustration.

Tonally fantastic as both images work well. I only prefer the first one as I like a bit of colour :) Lovely illustration!

The composition of this is great. I prefer the first version: the warmer shadows in sienna and ultramarine match the warmth of the dragon’s protective gaze.

He looks like he makes a really comfortable pillow!

Definitely the original. The differences are subtle but the color adds more depth to the piece. Nice illo!
