Illustration Friday: “Dessert”
September 5, 2010
Don’t worry, the mouse is safe and the kittens get a bowl of cream for dessert so they are happy too.
I wanted to take a little break from my usual watercolor illustrations and experiment with a technique that is new to me, cross-hatching with pen & ink. I think it turned out pretty well for my first one. If any of you inkers out there can offer any words of wisdom I’m all ears…just like my lucky little mouse friend here.
Thanks for visiting!

That’s brilliant!
I love the style you used and I love the scene as well – really unique for this weeks topic. great job
Great one Aura! Love the angle and the expressions. Glad to hear that all are safe and happy
) You’ve done an amazing job with cross-hayching. Something that I tried and tried. Failed and failed. You most certainly succeeded. NICE!
cute little mousies
This is really brilliant. Glad the little mousey lived to tell the tale! Great POV and the expressions of the mouse and the hungry kitties is spot on!
Great angle, and the cross-hatching really works. Good job.
Very nice! Not so sure you need advice about cross hatching. Just do more of it!
this is so cute, I love the shadow and angle too..
Love it!
I love it. Looks like it was super tedious! I wish I had your patience.
Hi Aura,
This is a really great image. I love the little mouse tail wrapped so tightly around the branch. I think you did a great job with the pen and very ambitious to ink the whole image. I especially love the shadows!!
HI AURA! THAT IS VERY COOL,YOU ALWAYS DID HAVE A TALENT FOR PEN AND INK,LOVE IT,MOM
Hi Aura,
Thanks for the comment on my blog… sorry it’s taken me ages to reply! I love this image by the way… really amazing composition, and the shadows just make it extra-nice as well! Love the wrapped-around tail.
My Caran D’Ache pencils are the Prismalo and the Supracolor ones… I find them very similar. They are quite soft though, so I’m not sure if they would be what you want. I like them soft. I use them dry, but occasionally use the white pencil slightly dampened to go over areas or lines that I want to lighten. I don’t really know the Pablo ones.
I find Derwent pencils much harder, so maybe you could try those? I have a few Derwent Studio coloured pencils that are really hard but they’re not water-soluble.
Hope that helps in some way!
