Illustration Friday: “Drifting”
June 23, 2009
This is something I’ve been thinking of painting for some time–I just liked the idea of an “Owl and a Pussycat” on a boat. I don’t remember the nursery rhyme very well, but the title was enough for me! I thought this week’s IF word “drifting” was my chance to make it happen. My goal was to use a limited color palette of new gamboge, cadmium orange, indigo, winsor blue and sap green. I mixed amongst these to create a cohesive color scheme, and I think it worked, although the original is much brighter than the scan I think. I also did a little outlining with a black ink pen to make some of the details stand out.

I like the stylized patterns and the colors work well together!
very fun (they run off to get married and dance to the light of the moon sharing mince pie with a runcible spoon, my favorite line, but I still don’t know what a runcible spoon is).
colours are great! as is the illo.
This is quite charming.
