Illustration Friday: “Drifting”

June 23, 2009

Web-owlandpussycatThis is something I’ve been thinking of painting for some time–I just liked the idea of an “Owl and a Pussycat” on a boat. I don’t remember the nursery rhyme very well, but the title was enough for me! I thought this week’s IF word “drifting” was my chance to make it happen. My goal was to use a limited color palette of new gamboge, cadmium orange, indigo, winsor blue and sap green. I mixed amongst these to create a cohesive color scheme, and I think it worked, although the original is much brighter than the scan I think. I also did a little outlining with a black ink pen to make some of the details stand out.

very fun (they run off to get married and dance to the light of the moon sharing mince pie with a runcible spoon, my favorite line, but I still don’t know what a runcible spoon is).
